Weekly unemployment claims

U.S. initial unemployment-benefit claims rose to a seasonally adjusted 199,000 in the week ended October 10, the Labor Department reported on October 15. That was 1,000 more than the previous week's revised 198,000. The four-week average of initial claims was 198,500. [1]

Continuing claims, reported a week behind initial applications, fell 4,000 to 1.71 million for the week ended October 3. The was 1.1%. [1]

Initial claims in the same week a year earlier were 222,000 on a seasonally adjusted basis. Seasonally adjusted means the department has smoothed the figures for regular calendar patterns, such as holidays and seasonal hiring, so that weeks can be compared with one another. [1]
