Futures before the bell
Futures trade outside regular stock hours, so they only hint at where the indexes may open. At 5:18 am ET, Benzinga showed Dow futures up 0.34%, S&P 500 futures down 0.32% and Nasdaq-100 futures down 1.21% [1]. Yahoo Finance, in a note published at 4:58 am ET and citing readings from 4 am, had Nasdaq futures down 1%, S&P 500 futures down 0.3% and Dow futures up 0.4% [2]. Neither source named a contract month.
On Wednesday the S&P 500 fell 1.11% to 7,718.94, the Nasdaq Composite fell 1.88% to 26,692.87 and the Dow fell 0.09% to 51,621.48, after the Labor Department reported September consumer prices up 0.6% from August and 3.7% from a year earlier; core prices, which leave out food and energy, rose 0.3% on the month and 2.6% on the year, CNBC reported [5]. Saxo said the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index sank 4.5% on Wednesday, with AMD down 5.73%, Nvidia down 3.16% and a large AI cloud-computing provider down more than 15% on concern about its debt [3].
Overnight: chip sell-off deepens in Asia
Saxo said the chip sell-off spread into Korea and Japan overnight: South Korea's Kospi was down 8.02% at 5,527.12, a fourth straight decline, and Japan's Nikkei 225 was down 5.13% at 64,267.09, with Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix each down more than 10% [3]. Hong Kong's Hang Seng was down 1.47% at 23,955.59 [3]. Benzinga said Asian markets were lower on Thursday except India's Nifty 50, and that European markets were mixed in early trading [1]. On Wednesday, Saxo said, the Stoxx Europe 600 rose 0.43% to its highest close since Sept. 29 as investors rotated toward healthcare and food stocks [3].
TSMC, the Taiwanese company that is the world's largest contract chipmaker, reported a record third-quarter profit and raised its 2026 revenue guidance, yet its U.S.-listed shares were down about 2% in premarket trading [2][1]. The 10-year Treasury yield was 5.09% in Benzinga's report and below 5.11% in Saxo's, which called it a three-week low after the yield gave back a rise that followed Wednesday's inflation report [1][3]. Brent crude traded around $105 a barrel early Thursday, Saxo said, after settling Wednesday at $106.33 for December delivery [3][5]. Benzinga had U.S. West Texas Intermediate futures down 0.34% at about $94.77 a barrel [1].
Data, Fed speakers and earnings
Benzinga listed September retail sales and producer prices, weekly jobless claims for the week ended Oct. 10, and the October Empire State and Philadelphia Fed surveys, all due by 8:30 am ET, with manufacturing and trade inventories at 10:00 am ET [1]. Saxo's calendar showed the same releases at 12:30 GMT, which is 8:30 am ET [3]. Neither page gave consensus forecasts.
Fed Chair Kevin Warsh is scheduled for a fireside chat with IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva, listed at 11:30 pm ET on the Federal Reserve's calendar [4]. Benzinga lists Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack at 4:30 pm ET [1]. The Fed's next policy meeting is October 27–28 [4].
Yahoo Finance listed Charles Schwab, PNC Financial Services and BNY among the companies reporting Thursday, along with a regional bank, a logistics real-estate company and an aluminum producer; it did not give report times [2].
What remains uncertain
Futures, overseas and yield readings are early-morning snapshots with different timestamps and will change before the 9:30 am ET open; contract months were not stated. Sources differ on futures percentages by small amounts. Saxo's Asian readings carried no clear time stamp. No consensus forecasts for retail sales, producer prices or jobless claims were found. Details of TSMC's results beyond the record profit and raised guidance were not checked here; Hammack's appearance comes from Benzinga, not the Fed calendar.
