How the major indexes finished
The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 52,177.69, up 556.21 points, or 1.08%. The S&P 500 closed at 7,744.06, up 25.12 points, or 0.33%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 26,713.03, up 20.16 points, or 0.08%. The small-company Russell 2000 gained 1.38% to 2,767.28 [1]. The percentage moves are measured against Wednesday's closes of 51,621.48 for the Dow, 7,718.94 for the S&P 500 and 26,692.87 for the Nasdaq [3][2].
The figures come from Yahoo Finance's market display, which was labeled 'U.S. markets closed', and match the daily closing series in Yahoo's chart data. They are the cash indexes, not futures or fund prices. They are the first prints after the 4:00 p.m. Eastern close and could be adjusted slightly by the index providers [1][2].
The split was a reversal of Wednesday's pattern. On Wednesday the Nasdaq fell 1.9% and the S&P 500 fell 1.1% after a hotter-than-expected consumer price report, while the Dow slipped only 0.1% [3]. On Thursday the Nasdaq roughly held its ground and the Dow led. In a midday market note, health care was the strongest of the 11 S&P 500 sectors and information technology the weakest [4]. At the close, Yahoo's display showed the health care sector fund up 1.85% and the technology sector fund down 0.67%; those are prices, not the sector indexes themselves [1]. The VIX, a gauge of expected stock-market swings, fell to 16.41 [1].
Inflation data, Treasury yields and the chip sell-off
The Labor Department's producer price index, which tracks prices businesses receive at the wholesale level, rose 1.3% in September from August, against a consensus forecast of 0.5%. The version that excludes food and energy rose 0.7% against an expected 0.3% [4]. Over twelve months, final-demand prices rose 6.3%, the largest annual increase since December 2022, according to a quotation of the Bureau of Labor Statistics release in one report [5]. That came a day after a consumer price report showed September inflation of 3.7% a year, above the 3.6% forecast [3].
Other morning data were mixed. A midday market note reported retail sales up 0.8% in September, 'surprisingly resilient', a sharp jump in the Empire State manufacturing index for October, and initial jobless claims of 199,000 for the week ended October 10, in line with expectations [4]. No Philadelphia Fed survey result was available in the sources reviewed.
Treasury yields fell despite the inflation figures. The 10-year yield was about 5.09% late in the session, down roughly 10 from Wednesday's 5.19%, according to Yahoo Finance data; a midday report had it at 5.09%, down 9 basis points, with the 2-year at 4.76% and the 30-year at 5.42% [2][4]. A is one-hundredth of a percentage point. None of the sources read explains the decline in yields.
Technology shares remained under pressure from overseas. South Korea's Kospi index closed 8% lower overnight, with Samsung Electronics down 9% and chipmaker SK Hynix down 11%. Japan's Nikkei 225 fell 5% and Taiwan's Taiex fell 3%, with TSMC down 2% [1]. Analysts quoted in the reports tie the technology slide to concerns about interest rates and about the cost of the artificial-intelligence spending boom [1][4]. In U.S. trading, Yahoo's chart data show the Philadelphia semiconductor index down about 0.9% on Thursday and Nvidia down about 1.8%, after a roughly 4% drop in the semiconductor index on Wednesday [2]. Oil rose: the November West Texas Intermediate contract was up 2.44% at $96.19 a barrel on Yahoo's display, with Middle East tensions cited by reports for Wednesday's gains [1][3].
Bank earnings
Four large financial companies reported third-quarter results on Thursday. PNC reported net income of about $2.1 billion, or $4.97 per diluted share ($5.09 as adjusted), with of $4,206 million, up from $4,107 million in the second quarter and $3,648 million a year earlier [6]. U.S. Bancorp reported record net revenue of $7,970 million, net income of $2,202 million and diluted earnings of $1.34 per share, up 9.8% from a year earlier [7]. BNY reported earnings of $2.34 per share, with revenue up 12% from a year earlier [8]. Charles Schwab reported record net revenue of $7.2 billion, up 17%, net income of $2.9 billion, or $1.62 per share ($1.69 adjusted, which excludes $151 million of transaction-related costs), and record core net new assets of $190.4 billion [9].
On share prices, Yahoo's daily chart data show BNY up about 3.2% at $142.09, U.S. Bancorp up about 2.0% at $57.39, PNC down about 0.4% at $214.94 and Schwab down about 2.7% at $94.16 [2]. The sources do not explain those moves; the reports do not give an analyst-consensus comparison for any of the four.
What remains uncertain
Index levels are the first closing prints and could be revised slightly; they were read from Yahoo Finance, not directly from the index providers or exchanges. Sources differ on how likely a Federal Reserve rate increase is at the meeting about two weeks away: one Thursday morning report cited CME FedWatch at about a 29% chance of a hike, while an analyst quoted by TheStreet called it close to a coin flip after Wednesday's inflation data [5][1]. The 10-year yield is a Yahoo Finance reading of about 5.09% taken just before 3:00 p.m. Eastern and a Yahoo display of 5.09%; the official Treasury close may differ by a or two. Retail-sales, Empire State and jobless-claims figures come from a single midday summary and were not checked against the government releases. Share-price changes for individual companies are computed from Yahoo chart data. Company results are as reported by each company and use different definitions.
