Start with the national-bank entity
Zions Bancorporation, National Association is itself the national bank, based in Salt Lake City. “Bancorporation” should not automatically be read as a separate holding company. The Federal Reserve reports $87.957 billion of bank assets at March 31, 2026. [1]
The company describes seven separately managed geographic divisions, primarily across 11 Western states. Local brands and management can support relationships, but do not automatically create separate legal banks. Identify the account issuer and contracting entity rather than relying on a branch brand. Why headline EPS needs a bridge
The July 20, 2026 second-quarter release reported these figures. Adjusted measures are company-defined, not substitutes for GAAP. [2]

Separate gains from repeatable economics
Prior-year quarterly GAAP EPS was $1.63; the company reported $1.58 excluding net equity investment gains. Comparing $3.05 with $1.63 describes reported earnings growth but does not isolate recurring banking performance. Use the release’s reconciliation to understand the difference. [2]
Analysis: an investment gain can create real value and capital while being a poor baseline for the next quarter. Removing it for recurring-earnings analysis does not imply it was fictitious. Maintain both views. Multiplying an unusually strong quarter by four is not an evidence-based annual forecast.
Local relationships and shared concentration
A decentralized model can bring borrower knowledge and local decisions. Test that proposition through outcomes, pricing and retention rather than assuming local brands guarantee stronger underwriting. Consolidated exposures and common risk policies still matter across divisions.
For Utah and other Western markets, map borrowers, construction activity, collateral and deposits to their economic drivers. A customer using multiple divisions may create correlated exposure. Look through names and brands where legal and data access permit. Local concentration is relevant to both repayment and funding: a shared shock can weaken borrowers and prompt withdrawals together.
Worked normalization and downside exercise
Using the company’s disclosed per-share bridge, $3.05 less $1.12 and $0.19 equals $1.74. That arithmetic explains the adjusted result; it does not prove every remaining item recurs. Read the full reconciliation and subsequent disclosures before treating the adjusted figure as a forecast.
The company reported an annualized net ratio of 0.06%. Low realized losses are a lagging observation, not assurance about future credit. A practical stress combines weaker repayment, deposit repricing and collateral declines. Test cash generation and funding needs separately from the capital benefit of gains. [2]
Questions for the next review
Recommended monitoring asks whether spread income and fees sustain earnings without large equity gains, whether deposit costs and balances stabilize, and whether criticized exposures rise ahead of . Compare consistently defined observations and retain original dates. Separate management expectations from reported outcomes.
A partner review should also verify exposure aggregation across brands, service continuity and settlement responsibilities. This profile makes no determination of an individual customer’s deposit insurance, which depends on ownership category and applicable rules. It is an operating and disclosure framework, not an investment recommendation or supervisory assessment. The March asset snapshot should remain dated until a comparable bank-level observation is verified.
