The bank name behind a new crypto account
Schwab’s April 16, 2026 announcement assigned a specific role to Charles Schwab Premier Bank, SSB: clients would maintain a separate crypto account offered by the bank, linked to their brokerage account. Premier would safeguard and keep records of the digital assets, with Paxos providing sub-custody and execution infrastructure. The arrangement placed a bank subsidiary inside a new customer service, rather than simply adding another security to an ordinary brokerage account. [1]
A later, dated announcement resolves an important timing question. On August 27, Schwab said the rollout had begun in May and already offered bitcoin and ethereum trading. It planned to add solana, avalanche and chainlink in the coming months. A plan for additional tokens is not evidence that all were available by October 6, nor that every client or jurisdiction had access to the initial service. [2]
A distinct charter with an older origin
The FDIC’s October 2, 2026 directory identifies an active Charles Schwab Premier Bank, SSB in Westlake, Texas, certificate 33497, with the Federal Reserve as primary federal regulator. Its recorded establishment date is August 30, 1991. That date predates Schwab’s ownership and should not be mistaken for the launch of Schwab’s crypto business. The certificate is separate from Charles Schwab Bank’s 57450, even though the two share a parent and location. [3]
Schwab’s 2019 annual report says it acquired the federal savings-bank charter in late 2017. By the end of 2019, Premier had $14.3 billion in assets, and its balance sheet consisted primarily of investment securities. Those historical facts establish that it had a substantial bank business long before the 2026 digital-asset announcement. They also help explain why Premier appears in bank rankings even though it is less familiar to customers than the group’s principal checking-bank subsidiary. [4]
Premier converted from a federal savings association in Nevada to a Texas-chartered savings bank in Westlake on March 20, 2020, alongside Charles Schwab Bank. The two conversions did not merge their charters. [5]
Deposit funding and securities remain the balance-sheet story
The current cash-feature statement includes Premier among the affiliated program banks that receive eligible brokerage cash. The accounts are deposits with the receiving bank, while a crypto-custody relationship is a different product. A shared online interface does not make deposited dollars and safeguarded cryptocurrency the same kind of claim. [6]
At June 30, 2026, Premier reported $26.576 billion in assets and $24.456 billion in deposits, compared with $24.433 billion and $22.183 billion a year earlier. Securities were $22.856 billion, up from $19.686 billion; cash balances were $1.800 billion. Net loans were only $1 million, compared with $2.303 billion in June 2025. The public fields establish the change but do not explain whether particular loans were repaid, transferred or otherwise reclassified. [7]
First-half net income rose from $182 million to $205 million, and June equity was $2.095 billion. The noncurrent-loan ratio was zero, but the tiny current loan denominator limits its usefulness as a broad risk signal. These bank accounts do not establish the value of clients’ crypto holdings, crypto fee revenue or customer adoption. Those missing business measures should not be filled with the parent’s total client assets. [7]
The new role adds operating responsibilities
The April announcement described Premier as the custodian, with an outside infrastructure provider supporting sub-custody and trades, and said the affiliated broker-dealer performs some operations for the bank. In practical terms, a customer-facing institution can remain responsible for an account even when several firms support the service. Vendor oversight, accurate records and dependable transaction processing therefore sit alongside the traditional task of managing deposits and investments. The announcement does not disclose a standalone profit contribution from the service. [1]
The protections depend on the product
Schwab’s cryptocurrency materials warn of sharp price swings and the possibility of losing the entire investment. The fact that a bank supplies the account does not convert cryptocurrency into an insured deposit. Cryptocurrency is not FDIC insured. An undated product page still displayed coming-soon language when checked, while the August release documented an actual phased rollout. The dated release establishes that the service had begun; the mixed availability language leaves uncertainty about access for any particular applicant. It is therefore more accurate to describe a phased service than universal availability. [8]
Separate bank accounts, shared group risks
The 2025 annual report identifies Premier as a Texas-chartered bank subsidiary of The Charles Schwab Corporation, distinct from Charles Schwab Bank and the broker-dealer. Its securities-heavy structure makes interest-rate and funding conditions important even with little reported lending. Market-value changes in securities and changes in the cost or persistence of deposits can matter without creating a past-due loan. The group’s risk discussion provides context, but it does not establish a Premier-specific stress-test outcome or quantify the bank’s crypto exposure. [9]
