Growth and income use different scales

Real GDP measures inflation-adjusted economic output. This chart shows growth from the preceding quarter at an annual rate: the pace that would result if that quarter’s growth continued for four quarters. It is not growth over the past year, and the published rate is already annualized.

Personal income is a broader national income measure that includes earnings and other income sources. The monthly levels shown here are in current dollars at a seasonally adjusted annual rate. They are not inflation-adjusted purchasing power, disposable income after taxes, or the amount received during that month.

GDP is quarterly and personal income is monthly, so their latest reporting periods can differ. Earlier estimates can be revised as more complete source data become available. When observations arrive through FRED, the source remains BEA and the distributor is identified separately.
