Salt Lake City developers are continuing to build housing aimed at students even as the wider apartment market struggles to fill units, Building Salt Lake reported October 5. Its interviews describe a shift toward shared apartments rented by the bedroom.
Local real-estate executives told the outlet that student demand and the University of Utah’s effort to become a more residential campus are encouraging development.
Demand is not unlimited. A university spokesperson told Building Salt Lake that campus housing was 86% occupied as of the preceding week. That figure describes university housing, not the occupancy of privately owned student apartments across the city.
The report identifies Chapter SLC on 400 South as under construction, with nearly 700 beds and a targeted 2028 opening. Other projects remain planned. Whether students will absorb the added rooms remains uncertain.
