NFIB Ohio State Director Jared Weiser said small employers in the state are hiring more cautiously as business expenses rise. His comments appeared in an October 5 release discussing the organization’s September jobs report.
The distinction between commentary and measurement matters here. NFIB explicitly says state-specific data are unavailable. The survey figures in the release describe small businesses nationally, so they cannot establish how much Ohio hiring changed.
Nationally, a seasonally adjusted 32% of owners reported job openings they could not fill, down three percentage points from August. Overall, 51% said they were hiring or trying to hire, down five points. The seasonally adjusted net share planning new jobs over the next three months was unchanged at 17%.
Those national results show softer reported hiring activity alongside continuing recruitment difficulties. Weiser’s assessment provides an Ohio perspective, but it is not a separate statistical reading of the state’s labor market.
