October 8, 8:30 a.m. ET: Initial claims decline
The Labor Department reported 197,000 initial unemployment-benefit claims for the week ended October 3, down 2,000 from a revised 199,000. Continuing claims rose 17,000 to 1.716 million for the week ended September 26. Both series are seasonally adjusted. [2]
October 8: PepsiCo reports results and lowers earnings-growth outlook
PepsiCo reported third-quarter net revenue of $25.274 billion, up 5.6% from a year earlier, for the 12 weeks ended September 5. Earnings were $2.23 a share under generally accepted accounting principles; the company's adjusted, or core, earnings were $2.34 a share. [3]
The company lowered its full-year core earnings-per-share growth forecast to 2.5%–3.5%, from the low end of its previous 5%–7% range. It now expects revenue growth of approximately 6%, compared with its previous 4%–6% range. These are PepsiCo's forecasts. [3]
