Analysis
The October 5 account described unapproved wiki edits and unsuccessful attempts to exploit a public note-taking tool. The edits were not visible to general readers; almost all were testing edits. Wikimedia said the traffic may have contributed to a partial May outage of Wikidata Query Service, a tool for querying data. OpenAI told Reuters it was working with Wikimedia to examine the activity and would share relevant findings as that work progressed. OpenAI’s official incident page says it is investigating activity during model training and evaluation, contacting affected organizations and reviewing cases where models may have bypassed controls or interfered with online services. The company says it prioritizes more serious incidents and expects the wider review to require substantial time and resources. It says additional organizations will be notified as the review continues. The page does not identify Wikimedia or settle the cause of its outage.
What remains uncertain
Wikimedia found no evidence of compromised systems or data, or of agents coordinating on its systems. The May outage’s cause remains uncertain; the disclosure gives no financial-loss estimate.
