Student Loan Marketing Association
The Student Loan Marketing Association was the historical government-sponsored enterprise nicknamed Sallie Mae, which began operations in 1973 to support student lending.
This historical entity is distinct from the industrial bank chartered in 2005 and the present SLM Corporation formed in late 2013. Navient’s historical account records the end of government-sponsored-enterprise status in 2004.
Sallie Mae Bank’s 2005 Utah charter underpins a private education lender reshaped by the 2014 corporate separation, deposit and securitization funding, and a newer model that sells loans while retaining customer servicing.
