SLM Corporation is the present publicly traded parent of Sallie Mae Bank, a consumer-banking and private-education-finance group.
The current parent was formed in late 2013 and separated from the company now named Navient Corporation in April 2014. It is not the historical Student Loan Marketing Association, not Sallie Mae Bank itself, and not a bank holding company under the Bank Holding Company Act.
Sallie Mae Bank’s 2005 Utah charter underpins a private education lender reshaped by the 2014 corporate separation, deposit and securitization funding, and a newer model that sells loans while retaining customer servicing.
