First Republic Bank was a San Francisco bank founded in 1985 that served affluent households through banking, residential lending and wealth services. California closed it on May 1, 2023, and appointed the FDIC as receiver.
JPMorgan Chase Bank assumed all deposits and substantially all assets through the FDIC resolution. The historical First Republic Bank is separate from Republic First Bank and unrelated banks with similar names.
Three U.S. banks failed between March and May 2023. Their customers, assets and rescue attempts differed, but rapid withdrawals exposed weaknesses that had built up before the crisis.
