Cleveland Public Power is the City of Cleveland’s municipal electricity utility, historically known as Muny Light.
The utility’s history records its retention under public ownership during the 1978–1980 financial controversy and its 1983 adoption of the Cleveland Public Power name. It is not Cleveland Electric Illuminating Company.
Cleveland’s failure to repay short-term notes grew out of years of strained finances and a battle over public power. Recovery required new revenue, refinancing and changes that lasted well beyond the missed payment.
