Banamex USA was a California-based U.S. bank and an indirect Citigroup subsidiary that processed cross-border remittances.
The U.S. bank was separate from its Mexican affiliate Banco Nacional de Mexico. Citi acquired it in 2001 when it was named California Commerce Bank, announced a wind-down in 2015, and the DOJ described its exit and cessation of banking operations in the 2017 resolution.
The California bank’s remittance business grew while two staff members handled manual monitoring alongside other duties. Its admitted failures led to a $97.44 million forfeiture after a separate $140 million regulatory penalty and a decision to wind down.
