What it covers
IBKR combines global execution, clearing, custody and financing. Its operating scale, cash tiers and ownership structure explain more than its advertised commission schedule.

The business behind the trading screen

Interactive Brokers is an automated brokerage infrastructure business serving individuals, advisers, introducing brokers and institutional traders. Execution connects an order to a market; clearing and settlement complete the resulting obligations; custody maintains the client’s assets and records. These functions can coexist in one group without becoming investment management. An adviser using IBKR’s technology remains a separate decision-maker unless the client has explicitly contracted for advisory services. [2]

Interactive Brokers Group, Inc. is the listed holding company; IBG LLC owns the operating businesses. Interactive Brokers LLC is a U.S. broker, with international affiliates serving other jurisdictions. Investor protections depend on the legal entity carrying the account. [1]

A public company with a large noncontrolling interest

At December 31, 2025, the listed company held approximately 26.3% of IBG LLC and IBG Holdings LLC held 73.7%. The holding-company structure means consolidated operating results are not identical to earnings attributable to publicly traded common shareholders. The founder, Thomas Peterffy, and related ownership arrangements are central to governance; the 2026 proxy supplies the voting and beneficial-ownership details. [1][3]

Analysis: this is a reason to distinguish operating profitability, economic ownership and voting influence. A large consolidated pretax profit does not flow entirely to the public float. Conversely, the existence of a noncontrolling interest does not mean the listed company lacks operating control. Reading an income statement without its attribution lines can produce a materially wrong view of the shareholder claim.

Products and distribution

The platform covers stocks, options, futures, currencies, bonds and funds, with availability subject to location, permissions and account type. IBKR’s fact sheet identifies more than 170 markets and a client base spanning individuals and professional intermediaries. Trader Workstation, desktop and mobile tools, and APIs support different degrees of trading complexity. The reported breadth is a distribution capability, not evidence that every product is suitable for every client. [2]

Revenue is driven by balances as well as trades

For calendar 2025 IBKR reported $6.205 billion of net revenue, including $3.563 billion of net interest income and $2.149 billion of commissions; pretax income was $4.771 billion. These are consolidated reported figures, not adjusted results or client investment returns. [1]

Calculated shares of 2025 net revenue were 57.4% for net interest income and 34.6% for commissions; the pretax margin was 76.9%. Analysis: these ratios describe one historical business mix. Margin borrowing, customer cash, securities lending and benchmark rates can move together or offset one another, so the ratios alone do not forecast a future rate cut’s effect.

Analysis: a broker can grow customer accounts while revenue per account falls, or earn more interest while trading slows. Technology expenses have an important fixed-cost component, but regulatory, servicing and funding demands do not disappear at scale. High reported margins should therefore be interpreted alongside the risks and obligations supporting those revenues.

Lite and Pro are different economic arrangements

IBKR Lite offers commission-free eligible U.S. exchange-listed stock and ETF trades routed to selected market makers, supported by payment for order flow. Pro uses fixed or tiered commissions. The plan comparison also distinguishes interest paid on cash and interest charged on margin. The zero-commission label applies to specified orders, not every instrument or every charge. [4]

Routing compensation creates an incentive to consider what a venue pays the broker; a commission creates a visible transaction charge. Neither fact, on its own, measures the customer’s total execution result. Analysis: spreads, price improvement, completion probability, market impact and service reliability remain relevant. A plan comparison should not translate a routing label into an unsupported best-execution ranking.

Cash balances have thresholds and legal destinations

The interest schedule applies a zero-interest band to the first $10,000 of qualifying U.S.-dollar cash and scales the rate for account net asset value below $100,000. Currency, account and plan conditions matter. A headline marginal interest rate is therefore not the effective yield on the entire account. The source’s current terms should be checked rather than freezing a promotional or benchmark-linked rate into a permanent profile. [5]

Hypothetical illustration: with $20,000 cash and a qualifying account at the full rate, only the $10,000 above the threshold earns the stated cash rate. If that rate were 4%, annual interest would be about $400 before compounding and changes, equivalent to 2% on the full cash balance. Four percent is an assumption here, not a current IBKR quote.

Eligible clients can use IBKR’s bank-deposit sweep. Coverage depends on actual placement, ownership category and the customer’s other deposits at each receiving bank; a program maximum does not guarantee coverage of every account dollar. [9][8]

Scale should retain its denominator

IBKR’s second-quarter 2026 earnings release reports customer equity of $930.3 billion, 5.185 million customer accounts and 4.824 million daily average revenue trades. Customer equity belongs to account holders; it is distinct from the group’s $22.3 billion of consolidated equity. These figures describe the reported quarter, not live October balances. [10]

Analysis: market appreciation, contributions, withdrawals and borrowing affect client equity. Accounts do not equal unique people, and daily average revenue trades do not equal shares traded or a pure measure of investor welfare. Those definitions prevent misleading comparisons with a fund manager’s AUM or a retirement administrator’s assets under administration.

Protection and operating risks

For eligible U.S. securities accounts, SIPC protection addresses missing customer property in a member-broker liquidation, generally up to $500,000 including a $250,000 cash sublimit. It does not insure trading losses. IBKR’s protection disclosure describes additional coverage with separate limits, while commodity accounts and overseas entities require their own treatment. [6][7]

The important operating risks include market gaps through collateral, forced liquidations, securities-lending exposures, cyber incidents, outages and jurisdiction-specific restrictions. Margin can magnify losses beyond the initial investment; a broker’s automated response may protect its balance sheet while realizing a customer loss. These are not contradictions: firm solvency controls and a client’s preferred trade horizon are different objectives. [4][6]

The analytical takeaway is an infrastructure-and-financing model whose economics depend on both activity and balances. The unresolved comparison is not which screen looks cheapest. It is which entity provides each service, what total costs arise under the client’s actual activity, and how the operating model behaves when and collateral values change.
