The Los Angeles bank and its Canadian parent
City National Bank of Los Angeles, FDIC certificate 17281, ranked thirty-third by assets at June 30, 2026 in the domestically chartered FDIC-insured bank and savings-institution universe, including U.S. territories and excluding foreign-bank branches and uninsured institutions. This identifies the California legal bank, not other institutions using a similar name. [2]
The bank reported $99.103 billion in assets, $81.510 billion in deposits and $68.463 billion in net loans and leases at the June quarter-end. [1]
City National identifies itself as a subsidiary of Royal Bank of Canada, commonly called RBC. Its own website separately reports approximately $100 billion in assets at July 31, 2026. The different date and rounding make that figure unsuitable as a replacement for the June FDIC ranking amount. Parent ownership does not turn the bank’s deposits, earnings or assets into group-wide measures. [3]
The bank’s 2026 overview describes a franchise spanning commercial and consumer banking, private banking and wealth management, and entertainment and sports. Its offices extend beyond Southern California into markets including New York, Nashville, Atlanta, Miami and Washington, D.C. That footprint supports a specialist relationship model across several business centers; it is not simply a Los Angeles retail branch franchise. Client investment assets administered by the bank or affiliates remain distinct from assets owned on the bank’s balance sheet. [4]
Business lending is only one part of the relationship
The business-banking offering separates companies below $50 million in annual revenue from larger commercial clients and combines deposit accounts, loans, credit cards, treasury services, capital markets and software capabilities. This segmentation is a description of how the bank presents its services, not a public breakdown of revenue or credit exposures by customer size. [5]
The relationship model has an economic logic: a company’s borrowing, collections, payments and owner’s finances can create several points of contact with the same institution. That can support interest income, service fees and operating deposits. It also introduces coordination costs. A broad menu says little by itself about cross-selling success, relationship profitability or whether every service is delivered by the insured bank. Those outcomes would require additional financial and customer evidence. [5]
The lending page lists small-business government-backed programs, revolving lines, asset-based lending, equipment finance and business cards. Equipment financing is described as a subsidiary offering. These structures address different needs: working-capital flexibility, collateral-supported borrowing, financing a durable asset or managing employee expenditure. A product’s collateral or government-program eligibility can change the loss mechanism, but neither eliminates underwriting, documentation and servicing requirements. The menu is not a loan-portfolio composition table and does not establish current or performance. [6]
Operating accounts connect funding with payment execution
Deposits were 82.2% of June assets; net loans and leases were approximately 84.0% of deposits. These calculations indicate substantial deposit funding alongside a sizable lending book. They do not disclose insured deposit share or stress . Operating accounts can fluctuate with client spending while contractual loans may not convert to cash as quickly. That timing mismatch is a risk mechanism, not evidence of a deposit run. [1]
The treasury-management offering includes accounting integration, account reporting, fraud controls, liquidity tools, payments and receivables. Integration connects bank activity with a client’s own accounting workflow rather than treating every payment as a separate manual instruction. Collection and payment services can help make a bank relationship operationally important to a business. [7]
The same connection creates dependencies on access permissions, payment instructions, reconciliation and reliable reporting. A bank may fund a sound borrower but still face operational loss if a payment workflow fails. Conversely, successful payment execution does not prove the underlying borrower is creditworthy. The company’s claims of efficiency and fraud prevention describe intended service benefits, not independently measured outcomes for every client. [7]
Entertainment finance reflects distinctive cash flows
City National’s entertainment and sports offering includes production and working-capital finance, lending against intellectual-property rights and music catalogs, and financing connected with sports businesses. It also offers payment and accounting tools for business managers, family offices and entertainment companies. The bank describes service centers in Los Angeles, New York, Nashville, Atlanta and Miami. These are concrete specialist capabilities rather than a claim that every entertainment client has the same financing needs. [8]
The analytical distinction is between financing an asset and processing the cash that asset generates. A film or music-rights business may require money before receipts arrive, while later payments must be allocated among multiple recipients. Value therefore depends on contractual rights, collection timing and execution as well as the collateral label. Specialized knowledge can help interpret those cash flows, but does not remove concentration or valuation risk. The public product description does not quantify the bank’s exposure to any one production, catalog or sports franchise. [8]
Private banking overlaps business and personal finances
The private-bank page identifies families and individuals, business owners, attorneys and private-equity professionals as client groups. It describes coordination across banking, financing and wealth planning, drawing on the parent group’s capabilities. For an owner, a business transaction may simultaneously affect company cash, personal and longer-term investment needs. The franchise can therefore connect commercial and personal relationships rather than serving them as unrelated markets. [9]
That overlap requires careful interpretation of scale. A client’s investments under management or administration are not automatically bank deposits, and an advisory relationship is not itself a credit exposure. Equally, wealth does not remove the need to evaluate repayment capacity or collateral. These distinctions matter when comparing City National with a predominantly mass-market consumer bank or with a standalone investment manager. [9]
Supervisory history is material, but its dates matter
On January 31, 2024, the OCC announced a $65 million civil money penalty against City National and a cease-and-desist order addressing risk management and internal controls. The agency described heightened-standards noncompliance and Bank Secrecy Act and fiduciary-activities violations. Required corrective areas included strategic planning, operational and compliance risk, fair lending and investment-management practices. The announcement also discussed an earlier financial-subsidiary agreement. These are dated regulator findings and actions, not a new October 2026 event. [10]
The breadth is relevant to a franchise that combines loans, payments, private banking and investment-related services: controls must function across those activities. However, this review did not establish the full current legal status of the 2024 order or verify a later termination as of October 5, 2026. The historical release cannot establish that every requirement remains open, that remediation has been completed or that the bank has a particular confidential supervisory rating. [10]
Separately, on January 12, 2023, the Justice Department announced an agreement resolving allegations of mortgage redlining in Los Angeles County during 2017 through at least 2020. The announced proposed included a $29.5 million loan-subsidy fund plus outreach, education and community-partnership funding, as well as branch and mortgage-staffing commitments. At announcement, the order was subject to court approval; the allegations should not be rewritten as adjudicated findings. [11]
That historical matter concerns access to mortgage credit and local service coverage, not merely the profitability of loans ultimately made. The release does not prove completion of the commitments or establish their present legal status. Taken together, the dated actions explain why relationship breadth and community reach need to be considered alongside balance-sheet scale, without treating historical enforcement as a current solvency assessment.
